Nnewi is the second largest city in
Anambra State in southeastern
Nigeria (in the region formerly known as
Biafra). Nnewi comprises four autonomous villages,Otolo,Uruagu,Umudim and Nnewi-Ichi.
Ichi, an autonomous neighbouring town, is also considered part of the expansive Nnewi city. Together Nnewi and its satellite towns have a population of about 2.1 million (2005 est.), with Nnewi itself having an estimated population of 204,252 (2007 estimate).
Infrastructure and economy
Nnewi city hosts the
Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH). Its industries include
palm oil,
cosmetics, motor and motorcycle spare parts, books and stationaries,
textiles,electric cables and weaving. Other markets include Nkwo Nnewi market and Nwafor market.
People
Nnewi is the ancestral home of prominent Nigerians, including
Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the former military Governor of defunct Eastern Nigeria and President of defunct Republic of
Biafra,
Nwafor Orizu, a former nationalist and
First Republic Senate president,
M.C.K Ajuluchukwu, a nationalist, anti-colonial fighter and first republic law-maker, and
Felix Ezejiofor Okonkwo, Okonkwo-Kano, the leader of Igbo's in Northern Nigeria in the 1960's.
